SBMA launches the revitalized DWSB 89.5 FM Subic Bay Radio

Operated by the SBMA under the franchise of the state-run Philippine Broadcasting Service, DWSB 89.5 Subic Bay Radio was established in 2004 to serve as a medium for promoting the Subic Bay Freeport Zone as an investment and tourism haven, and at the same time provide radio services for the community of Subic Bay Freeport and its contiguous areas.

The Resurrection of 89.5 Subic Bay FM

We're BACK! Finally, after several excruciating months of trying to rescusitate Subic Bay Freeport's official FM radio station, DWSB 89.5 Subic BayFM is now back on air! How we were able to do it was like some miracle of sorts.

Surprised? I know you are, or haven't you noticed why this blog only has new music lists and featured artists in its past few posts...well, we sort of died, temporarily. Long story really, but here goes:

It took a lot of prodding, and surprisingly, the wrath of mother nature that made this happen. Months have passed since our last broadcast. Us radio geeks were really having a hard time trying to convince a lot of people to just purchase our equipment real fast after our old, virtually low-powered set up was taken away leaving this station in the backburner. A new consultant was hired, a new agreement was forged with the mother network for the procurement of our equipment, and we really thought that everything will turn out the way we expected it to be even as we know how utterly snail-paced government processes can be.

Then typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng happened, two powerful storms that left majority of Luzon in total destruction. During that time, a huge advertising congress was about to happen in Baguio City. But then its organizers decided to change the venue and decided to go for Subic Bay.

With only a few weeks left, our agency worked overtime to prepare for the event - roads were paved and painted on, the convention center prepped and, the clincher for us geeks: 89.5 Bay FM was ordered to go back on air at all cost (being that the radio station is also going to be exhibited at the AdCon).

With absolutely no room for me to get all stressed, us geeks set out to immediately get ourselves even the basic equipment for us to operate the station again. Emergency procurement was the ticket. A lot of people came in to help us out (thank you all so much!) and in just barely a week and in time for the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress, we were back on air!

After finally upping our test broadcast, we rushed to the AdCon's exhibition area, installed a small set up at the Subic Bay booth and did our thing.

Whew! I bet reading this could have also stressed you out.

But then, this is only the beginning (a new beginning, that is). Still got loads to do and we do hope that starting today, 89.5 Subic Bay FM will NEVER leave the airwaves.

And the Bay FM saga continues...

12nn – 3pm = “HAPPY HOUR” with DJ’s Manay Junie, Jhepsz & Bubut (threesome)

Modeled after top famous Manila threesome lunchtime wacky programs, your day will not be complete without your daily dose of humor, insanity, and music, music, music the Subic Bay way! The Happy Hour radio show lets you take control of our playlist as you cruise through the mid portion of your work day in euphoria.

The show is distinctly funny thanks to the humorous way the DJs go through the program. The DJs would regularly get SMS from listeners who would tell them that people would look at them like they were crazy while listening to the show. One particular case was of a certain listener alone in her car while driving from work to a restaurant for her lunch break and people from other vehicles were staring at her because they would see her laughing by herself. Another case would be a student listening to the show on his mobile phone, commuting on a jeepney and couldn't help but to laugh out loud, to the surprise and curiosity of his fellow commuters. A third case would be a worker at a certain SBMA company while in the employee’s cafeteria currently on his lunch break listening to the show on his mp3 player, and grinning widely, trying not to laugh out loud while co-workers stares at him and wonders why the silly grin.

3pm – 6pm = “THE ALL HIT RADIO SHOW” with DJ Double B (solo)
50% Disco & M.O.R., 50% Mellow – with live-phone-in callers / greetings (pure) Today’s Hottest, Latest and Most Requested Songs

Take the music roller coaster that is The All Hit Radio Show! Whether you’re finishing up on your work, doing late afternoon household chores, behind the wheel, in a jeepney or in the backseat of your ride back home, relax, rewind, rejuvenate and enjoy with all of Today’s Hottest Hits with a veteran jock at the helm and in control of the console – Dj Double B!

6pm – 9pm = “THE MEAN GURLZ” with DJ’s Eimee & Lindsay (tandem)
60% Disco/M.O.R., 40% Mellow with live-phone-in callers / greetings

Just like the famous tandem of Manila’s Andi-9 and Jessica – Subic Bay’s very own Lady Jocks par excellence can tackle any topic fit for teenagers and young urban professionals alike. Finally, the two most kikays of all takes control of the board from 6pm onwards; it’s pretty Eimee who makes noise in the evening while sexy Lindsay jives, and both deeply entertain listeners through all the enjoyable segments of their program!

9pm – 12mn = “HEART AND SOUL” with DJ Bernie Mac (solo)
Classic, Classic Gold & Recall Love Songs

Say what’s on your mind; long time BAY FM Radio Jock Bernie Mac is listening. Heart and Soul is where listeners’ heart issues are given attention while songs of love serve as accompaniment.

Welcome to your new home, geeks!

The revitalized Subic Bay Radio

BayFM has been invaded! Not by aliens, silly...but by a new tribe of radio geeks now filling Subic Bay's airwaves.

Indeed, a lot of changes had happened since my last post (rant?) about our efforts to further develop Subic Bay's community FM station. Zaldy Dizon (from the SBMA Tourism Department) joined BayFM as our new marketing specialist (along with a new girl friday, Maureen). Our network, the Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS) came running to BayFM's side to actively assist us in finally getting our long-desired equipment which we hope would materialise soon (fingers crossed).

And then, enter the new tribe. Led by Andy Magcale (DJ DoubleB) who joined us as our new consultant for operations, these guys are, shall I say, really not that new in the business being that they had their stints in other stations in nearby Olongapo City and are local radio celebrities in their own right.

Of course, with this new line-up comes new programming. After a lot of prior discussions with DoubleB and BernieMac, we decided to go 50-50 (English and Tagalog spiels) and target mass-based listeners (with a reminder though of our responsibility to the higher-end Subic Bay-based audience). So...we did it. The first week of the new tribe was a bit strange for me (and a little scary). Since regular BayFM listeners are used to our less talk-more music high-end programming, I wasn't really sure how they would respond to this really drastic change (and its my neck on the chopping board).

Also signalling this new phase, BayFM now carries the better and apt tag Subic Bay Radio (well, we are the official radio station of Subic Bay...right?).

I'm so glad I didn't give in to my fears and I'm so excited to say that right now, everybody's having fun listening to BayFM!

With that all set up, now comes the next phase - moving in to our newly-constructed office and studio and the long-awaited comeback of a more powerful community radio station in Subic Bay (wish us luck!).
