The Resurrection of 89.5 Subic Bay FM

We're BACK! Finally, after several excruciating months of trying to rescusitate Subic Bay Freeport's official FM radio station, DWSB 89.5 Subic BayFM is now back on air! How we were able to do it was like some miracle of sorts.

Surprised? I know you are, or haven't you noticed why this blog only has new music lists and featured artists in its past few posts...well, we sort of died, temporarily. Long story really, but here goes:

It took a lot of prodding, and surprisingly, the wrath of mother nature that made this happen. Months have passed since our last broadcast. Us radio geeks were really having a hard time trying to convince a lot of people to just purchase our equipment real fast after our old, virtually low-powered set up was taken away leaving this station in the backburner. A new consultant was hired, a new agreement was forged with the mother network for the procurement of our equipment, and we really thought that everything will turn out the way we expected it to be even as we know how utterly snail-paced government processes can be.

Then typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng happened, two powerful storms that left majority of Luzon in total destruction. During that time, a huge advertising congress was about to happen in Baguio City. But then its organizers decided to change the venue and decided to go for Subic Bay.

With only a few weeks left, our agency worked overtime to prepare for the event - roads were paved and painted on, the convention center prepped and, the clincher for us geeks: 89.5 Bay FM was ordered to go back on air at all cost (being that the radio station is also going to be exhibited at the AdCon).

With absolutely no room for me to get all stressed, us geeks set out to immediately get ourselves even the basic equipment for us to operate the station again. Emergency procurement was the ticket. A lot of people came in to help us out (thank you all so much!) and in just barely a week and in time for the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress, we were back on air!

After finally upping our test broadcast, we rushed to the AdCon's exhibition area, installed a small set up at the Subic Bay booth and did our thing.

Whew! I bet reading this could have also stressed you out.

But then, this is only the beginning (a new beginning, that is). Still got loads to do and we do hope that starting today, 89.5 Subic Bay FM will NEVER leave the airwaves.

And the Bay FM saga continues...

Feature: THIRD EYE BLIND

Although often lumped into the post-grunge category, Third Eye Blind sported a brighter sound than many of their late-'90s peers, taking as much influence from classic pop/rock traditions as the angst-ridden music that dominated the decade. The group scored its first hit in 1997, when the debut single "Semi-Charmed Life" cracked the Top 10. Third Eye Blind built upon that success throughout the following three years, releasing a number of singles (three of which cracked the Top 10) while touring with the likes of U2 and Oasis. After taking a break during the early 2000s, the band returned in 2009 with its fourth studio album, Ursa Major.

Third Eye Blind hails from San Francisco, where singer Stephan Jenkins made his name as a solo musician after earning an English degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Jenkins soon decided to piece a band together. After several lineups failed to gel, former Fungo Mungo bassist Arion Salazar joined the group, which Jenkins had named Third Eye Blind (in reference to the metaphysical concept of a mind's eye). At one of the band's early shows, guitarist Kevin Cadogan -- a former student of Joe Satriani who later became involved in the northern California ska and punk scenes -- introduced himself to Jenkins. Cadogan subsequently joined Third Eye Blind in late 1995, bringing along former Counting Crows drummer Brad Hargreaves, as well.

As Third Eye Blind worked on cementing its sound, Jenkins began earning major-label attention through his production of the Braids' cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," which became an international hit. He signed a publishing deal shortly afterward, reported to be the largest such deal ever presented to an unreleased artist. Meanwhile, Third Eye Blind cultivated a dedicated fan base by playing the Bay Area frequently, and the group's original 14-song demo attracted attention from major labels. The buzz was continuing to build when the musicians finagled their way into a prized opening slot for Oasis' April 1996 concert at the Civic Auditorium. The group was still unsigned at the time, but following their well-received performance (which included an encore -- a rare opportunity for an opening band), Third Eye Blind became the subject of a bidding war.

The band eventually signed with Elektra/Asylum, a label that afforded them a considerable degree of artistic freedom. Jenkins was tapped as the band's producer and received a production deal to help develop new groups, but his top priority remained with Third Eye Blind. With Jenkins handling production studies, the band recorded their eponymous debut in San Francisco with the assistance of Eric Valentine, an engineer who had also worked on their early demos. The self-titled Third Eye Blind was released in the spring of 1997; by that summer, the introductory single "Semi-Charmed Life" had become a chart-topping modern rock hit. Spawning several more successful singles (including "How's It Going to Be" and "Jumper"), the album broke into the Billboard Top 200 and remained there for over a year, establishing Third Eye Blind as one of the most popular bands of the late '90s.

Blue followed in 1999 and sold 150,000 copies within a month of its release. Although fans heralded it as the band's strongest album, only one song -- the sprightly "Never Let You Go" -- matched the success of the band's past singles. Tours across the globe followed throughout 2000, but by the time 2001 rolled around, the band had lost a crucial member (guitarist Cadogan, who co-wrote much of the band's material before exiting the lineup) and opted for some time off. Tony Fredianelli soon climbed aboard as the band's replacement guitarist, and Third Eye Blind turned its attention to several charity events. They played shows in support of the Tiger Woods Foundation and helped organize Breathe, a performance that promoted breast cancer awareness.

Banner 2 Banner 1 go!

By 2003, Third Eye Blind resumed their schedule with the release of Out of the Vein. The record suffered from poor marketing, due in part to Elektra's merger with Atlantic, and Out of the Vein ultimately failed to ignite the same commercial sparks as its predecessor. Nonetheless, the band returned to the drawing board that same year, although Jenkins' lengthy battle with writer's block prolonged the release of a new album for six years. In the interim, a best-of compilation entitled A Collection appeared in 2006, and the band continued to tour in support of their past releases. Third Eye Blind's long-awaited fourth album, Ursa Major, was issued in 2009, preceded one year earlier by the digital EP Red Star.

Michael Jackson (29 August 58 - 25 June 09)

A superstar who spanned pop, disco and MTV, Michael Jackson was one of the great music heroes of the late 20th century. But by the time of his sudden death at age 50 in 2009, he was known less for his music than for his erratic behavior, wild spending, and many plastic surgeries. Jackson became a singing star at age 11, when he had four consecutive #1 hits with his youthful band of brothers, The Jackson Five. He went solo in 1972 with the album Got to Be There and embraced the glitter of disco with Off the Wall (1979). After his smash 1982 album Thriller yielded seven top-ten hits (including "Billie Jean" and "Beat It"), Jackson was dubbed "The King of Pop." Jackson was an early star of MTV and an international hitmaker. His distinctive wardrobe featured glittery suits and pseudo-military uniforms matched with the single white glove that became his signature; he also developed a signature dance move, the sliding reverse stroll known as the "moonwalk."

Jackson's next album, Bad, topped the charts in 1987. Then his eccentric lifestyle began to overwhelm his recording career, and Jackson became a favorite of the gossip sheets. In 1994 he married Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis (a.k.a. "The King"), but they divorced in 1996. Also notorious were Jackson's long series of cosmetic surgeries, rumors of exotic pets and superstar peccadilloes at Jackson's ranch estate (which he dubbed "Neverland", a reference to the story of Peter Pan), followed by another brief marriage to Deborah Rowe (1996-99) and multiple accusations of inappropriate conduct with children. In 2005 he was tried on charges of child molestation and conspiracy related to his relationship with a 13-year-old boy. Jackson was acquitted on all charges after a trial that year. He became increasingly reclusive, appearing in public only behind sunglasses, tinted car windows and silk face masks; reports of lavish spending and unpaid bills became standard fare. Jackson popped back up in London in 2009 to announce a new series of 50 performances in the city's O2 Arena, but died of cardiac arrest before the concerts could take place.

Extra credit: Jackson played the Scarecrow in the 1978 movie The Wiz, a takeoff on The Wizard of Oz; the role was played by Ray Bolger in the original 1939 film... Jackson's sister, Janet Jackson, was a pop superstar of the 1990s... Michael Jackson did not buy the bones of the Elephant Man, despite rumors to the contrary... Jackson had two children with Rowe: son Prince Michael (b. 1997) and daughter Paris Michael Katherine (b. 1998). He also had a third child, Prince Michael II (2002), whose mother has not been publicly named... The name of Jackson's famous pet chimp was Bubbles... Thriller has sold over 100 million copies, making it the best-selling album of all time.

Is this the end of free radio airplay?

BayFm is just trying to understand this issue...

Moneyed international musicians demanding radio stations (initially in the United States) to pay them for playing their music? In retaliation to this, several radio stations are allegedly now boycotting them.

This maybe happening on the other side of the globe, but if this artist coalition musicFIRST (purportedly composed of huge names in the music scene) gets their way, radio stations all around the world, from the big networked to small independent radio stations on and off the net, might just kiss all-music programs goodbye and say hello to talk radio (hehe).

BayFM is re-posting this article courtesy of AllAccess.com that talks about this brouhaha over airplay royalties. Read on and tell us what you think.

Is Bono Being Boycotted?
(as of 10 June 09)

Which top-selling artist purportedly had his new single yanked from some radio stations playlists in retaliation for supporting royalties for musicians?

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS reports no one involved will name the recording artist, but his no-play treatment by several radio stations is alleged in a complaint filed with the FCC and obtained by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS. It claims recording artists are being threatened and intimidated. In the filing, the MUSICFIRST COALITION says the top-selling artist -- there are hints it could be U2 frontman BONO -- recently released a new album and spoke during APRIL (NET NEWS 4/20) in support of an effort to require radio stations to pay musicians royalties similar to those paid to songwriters.

Soon after, it said, "several stations within a major radio broadcast group notified the artist's label that they would no longer play his single on the air."

"These are the cases we know about," MUSICFIRST Exec. Dir. JENNIFER BENDALL said. "We can only imagine what may be happening under the cover of silence."

A Response To Bono's Support Of Performance Fee?
In APRIL, BONO issued a statement on behalf of pay for musicians, saying, "It's only fair that when radio makes money by playing a recording artist's music ... the recording artist should be compensated just as songwriters are already."

Calls and e-mails by The AP to a spokeswoman for BONO were not immediately returned.

Other artists involved with MUSICFIRST include DON HENLEY, CELINE DION, CHRISTINA AGUILERA and WYCLEF JEAN.

Additional Claims
The filing also alleges unfair treatment of other artists by radio stations in FLORIDA, DELAWARE and TEXAS. It does not identify any of the stations but accuses the stations of unlawfully putting their own financial interests above their obligation to serve the public. The group asks the FCC, which regulates the public airwaves, to investigate.

The controversy centers on legislation in Congress that would require radio stations to pay musicians royalties. Satellite radio, Internet radio and cable TV music channels already pay fees to performers and musicians, along with songwriter royalties. AM and FM radio stations just pay songwriters, not performers.

The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BROADCASTERS opposes the bill, called the Performance Rights Act. The NAB says it amounts to a tax on U.S. radio stations and threatens thousands of jobs.

The filing by MUSICFIRST, made late TUESDAY, also said:

- A DELAWARE radio station boycotted all artists affiliated with MUSICFIRST for an entire month.

- Before an interview, an artist was pressured by a TEXAS radio station to state on the air that the Performance Rights Act would cripple radio stations.

A Non-Commercial High School Station Boycotted musicFIRST Artists For 30 Days
ALL ACCESS has learned that the DELAWARE radio station in question is BRANDYWINE SCHOOL DISTRICT Non-Comm WMPH (SUPER 91.7)/WILMINGTON. A MUSICFIRST spokesperson would not confirm that, saying, "We are not confirming stations other than those included in the filing."

While no longer posted, a cached version of the site finds this posting:

WMPH Boycotts Music First Coalition Artists

WMPH made an educational boycott for one month simply to make a statement in the music industry. The MUSICFIRST coalition wants radio stations to pay the artist for playing their music. From mid-JUNE through mid-JULY 2007, WMPH refused to play songs by any artist affiliated with the MUSICFIRST coalition.

musicFIRST Argues What's 'In The Public Interest'
MUSICFIRST is asking the FCC to investigate these actions, find that the stations have violated their public interest obligations and consider the broadcasters’ malfeasance in connection with their license renewal. MUSICFIRST is also asking the FCC to consider this conduct as part of its overall review of the length of radio stations licenses, currently seven years.

"Our message to the FCC is clear," BENDALL said. "We respect a broadcaster’s right to oppose the Performance Rights Act. But we cannot tolerate broadcasters’ use of the public airwaves to stifle debate, threaten artists and musicians and undermine the public interest in pursuit of their narrow, private business interests."

In a press conference held TODAY (6/10), MUSICFIRST claimed that "dozens of stations," with various ownership, had turned down ads from the coalition.

NAB Responds
NAB EVP DENNIS WHARTON issued the following statement, "This allegation is nothing more than an act of desperation by a record label lobby losing on CAPITOL HILL and in the court of public opinion. On one hand, it highlights the unparalled promotional value of free radio airplay, which has propelled countless artists to stardom. We would also note that WILL.I.AM, a vocal proponent of the performance tax, and his group BLACK EYED PEAS are currently #1 on BILLBOARD's Pop 100 Airplay Chart with the song 'Boom Boom Pow.'"

"If there's an FCC probe involving the music business, it ought to focus on claims from numerous artists -- from THE BEATLES to PRINCE to CHER -- that they were cheated out of royalties by their record labels."

Feature: THE FRAY

By pitching their music somewhere between the arena-friendly style of U2 and the mature pop/rock of bands like Maroon 5 and Counting Crows, the Fray rose to commercial prominence with their 2005 debut, How to Save a Life. The Denver-based band had formed three years prior, when former schoolmates Isaac Slade (vocals, piano) and Joe King (guitar, vocals) unexpectedly bumped into each other at a local music store. The pair began a series of two-man jam sessions and soon expanded their lineup with two of Slade's former bandmates, drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh. Slade's younger brother, Caleb, also joined the band for a stint but was ultimately asked to leave; the resulting rift between the two siblings would later inspire the band's first hit single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)." After issuing the Movement EP in 2002, the quartet gained the support of Denver's KTCL radio station with a follow-up release, 2003's Reason EP. As the Fray's airplay increased alongside their local profile (Westworld, a Denver alt. weekly publication, deemed them "Best New Band" in 2004), they began attracting attention from Epic Records. The label ultimately signed the band in December 2004, and the Fray toured alongside Weezer and Ben Folds the following summer.

How to Save a Life was released in September 2005, and "Over My Head (Cable Car)" found a quick home on modern rock radio. By early 2006, it had crossed over to Top 40 chart status, peaking at number eight and whetting the public's appetite for another hit. The Fray responded by releasing the album's title track, which was heavily used in a promotional campaign for the TV series Grey's Anatomy and quickly became one of 2006's biggest singles. "How to Save a Life" was a world-wide smash, reaching the Top Ten in the U.S. (where it continued to chart for 58 consecutive weeks) and peaking at number one in Bulgaria, Ireland, Canada, and Spain. By the time the smoke had cleared, the Fray's debut had been certified double-platinum in the U.S. and was declared the best-selling digital album of all time.

As How to Save a Life continued to enjoy world-wide chart success, the live album Live at the Electric Factory was released in selected independent stores in July 2006. The Fray re-released their Reason EP the following year while continuing to tour, occasionally playing new material at their high-profile shows. The band also found time to return to the recording studio, and 2009 saw the release of their self-titled sophomore effort, The Fray.

The Fray (2009)

The band finished recording their self-titled second album (The Fray) at the end of July 2008 for a February 3, 2009 release. The album was produced by Aaron Johnson and Mike Flynn, the same production duo from the band's debut album. The Fray filmed a music video in Chicago, for their first single, "You Found Me", directed by Josh Forbes, which debuted on VH1.com on December 9, 2008. The Fray debuted their new single "You Found Me" on November 20, during a commercial break of the show Grey's Anatomy. It was a one-minute promo with scenes from the upcoming season of ABC's Lost, and was also made available on iTunes. The band performed the song live at the 2008 American Music Awards on November 23, and have already shot acoustic video performances of the songs from the second album. The album became available for preorder on November 21. The Fray also performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live on December 17, 2008, Good Morning America on February 3, 2009, as well as a small-venue tour to preview the new album starting around the middle of December. You Found Me was the number one of the Australian ARIA charts for three consecutive weeks.

Indicative of the growing practice of musicians using the Internet to spur music sales, several videos from The Fray's new album, directed by Rod Blackhurst, were given to Comcast.net's Music page before they became available to television. Among them were acoustic versions of "You Found Me," "Say When," and "Enough for Now," and live versions of "You Found Me," "Never Say Never" and "Absolute."

The Fray have reached the number one spot on the Billboard charts selling 179,000 copies with the debut of their LP record, The Fray.

Banner 2 Banner 1 go!

In February, The Fray wrote a new song called "Be the One," which was written in one day and may be a future B-side. They have also recently covered Kanye West's song Heartless. The cover managed to chart at number seventy-nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

On March 14, The Fray confirmed on the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown that their next single will be "Never Say Never". They have filmed a video for this single, and has since been released on the internet only via their Myspace on April 24. It premiered everywhere else on May 5, 2009. On May 30, 2009, the music video itself premiered on the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown at the number 20 position.
